Metafields

Tangent does not require any particular metafield names. You create the definitions you need in Shopify admin and connect them to block settings in the theme editor. The one exception is product ratings, which Tangent reads from the reviews metafields that reviews apps write.

In the theme editor, a setting that can use a metafield shows a Connect dynamic source button next to it. Click it and choose your metafield. The setting then shows each product's own value.

The setting type decides which metafields you can connect:

1. In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Custom data > Products.
2. Click Add definition.
3. Enter a name, for example "Care instructions".
4. Choose the type.
5. Check that storefront access is on, then click Save.
6. Open a product and fill in the new field in its Metafields section.

• Metafield type: Rich text.
• Theme editor: open the product template. In the Product information section, add a Collapsible row block. Set Heading, for example "Care". Keep Content source on Custom content or page. Next to Content, click Connect dynamic source and choose your care metafield.

A collapsible row stays hidden on your store until it has content, so products without the metafield do not show an empty row.

Show a short line such as "Limited edition" above or below the title on the product page.

• Metafield type: Single line text.
• Theme editor: in Product information, add a Text block and move it where you want it. Set Style to Label, Body or Subtle. Next to Text, click Connect dynamic source and choose your metafield.

To show a badge on product cards, use product tags instead of a metafield. Turn on Theme settings > Product cards > Show badges from product tags, then tag the product badge: followed by the badge text, for example badge:Limited. A card shows at most two tag badges.

Link each product to its own size chart page. The guide opens in a side panel next to the size option.

• Metafield type: Page reference.
• First: create your size chart pages in Online Store > Pages, for example "Outerwear size chart".
• Theme editor: in Product information, select the Variant picker block. Next to Size guide page, click Connect dynamic source and choose your size guide metafield.

If you choose a single page instead of a metafield, every product shows the same guide. Tables in the page with cm or inch columns get a cm/in switch. Products without a size guide do not show the link.

Show measurements, weight or materials in a separate collapsible row.

• Metafield type: Rich text.
• Theme editor: in Product information, add another Collapsible row block, set Heading to "Specifications", and connect Content to your specifications metafield.

The Product rating block on the product page shows ratings from a product reviews app. Product cards show stars when Theme settings > Product cards > Show star rating is on. The header's Product cards block has its own Show star rating setting.

All three read the standard reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count product metafields. Reviews apps that follow Shopify's standard write these for you.
